VOLVO AMAZON
Back in 1956 the Volvo Amazon hit the car market. This model was originally called the Amason for the female warriors in Greek mythology. This name was used until 1961 and then the Amazon name, complete with the Z instead of a S, was incorporated. The model had a short production run form 1956-1970 and was built as a mid size car with three body type varieties. That included a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon.
The Volvo Amazon was based on the previous model, the PV, and shared the same wheelbase as the model and also its tall shape and hip point seating. When the Amazon was released it was the first of its kind in a few key areas. The model had 3-point seatbelts and offered seatbelts as a part of the standard equipment features. The first Amazon had 66 bhp and a single carburetor followed by the 122S model with a dual carburetor. In 1966 the Volvo PV stopped its production and the Amazon Favorit became the top model. The Amazon and its look paved the way for another Volvo model, the P1800.
The design of the Volvo Amazon was one that would definitely get you noticed. Being as it was a model that was introduced in the 1950s that would mean that it had a overall look of the other car models of the time. It had very noticeable tailfins and a look that took models out of the box. Other models had that look and the rectangle look was about to be a thing of the past. In 1962 an estate version made its debut to the car world. This body type was sold until 1969 with a bi-parting tailgate and a lower section for loading purposes.
